An Eye-Opening Resolution Worth Keeping

Make a resolution to include Eye Health as part of your family’s New Year General Health Plan. Our Optometry Practice supports a public awareness campaign promoting healthy eyes and vision safety.

1. Children should have a thorough optometric eye examination by the age of four.

2. Have your eyes examined without delay if you experience any visual changes, pain, flashes of light, or injuries. Diabetics should have more frequent examinations. African-Canadians are at a higher risk for glaucoma and also require closer monitoring.

3. Always wear protective eye wear during sports and when working with mechanical tools. Ninety percent of such injuries are preventable if only protective eye wear is used.

Contact Lenses and Your Child

Question: “My daughter has been asking for contact lenses. At what age would this be appropriate?”

Answer: Children become suitable candidate for contact lenses when they are ready to accept the responsibility of ongoing care and maintenance involved with contact lenses wear.

It usually depends on the child’s temperament and sense of responsibility. Some can be ready by age 7, others may not be ready until age 10 or even later. Continue reading

Look Ma! No Surgery! And No Glasses or Contact Lenses!

What parent wishes his or her child to be dependent daily upon eyeglasses or contact lenses to see the blackboard clearly or while playing sports and just plain being a kid?

Recent advances in non-surgical, Advance Ortho-keratology (or Ortho-K) allows a near-sighted child to improve his or her eyesight safely, without any risk of surgery, and to be able to see all day at school, play or home without any glasses or contact lenses.

Myopia or Nearsightedness (cannot see far distances without glasses) usually, but not always starts when a child is a pre-teen or a teenager, when the body as a whole changes a lot. In cases of low degrees of myopia, it is possible to wear comfortable, custom-fitted gas-permeable orth0-kertology contact lenses to reduce or eliminate nearsightedness as well as astigmatism. A retainer lens is worn on a periodic basis, temporarily, in order to maintain the improved shape of the cornea as the child grows, and myopia is therefore kept under check.

Ortho-Keratology in Markham, Richmond Hill, and the GTA

I started wearing Ortho-Keratology at the age of seven, and it changed my life. No more losing soft contact lenses in the gymnasium during a basketball game, no more gingerly walking around the pool because I couldn’t see without my glasses, no more itchy my eyes when dust got into my contacts. Ortho-K was the perfect solution, without surgery.

Having been a part of Dr. Hafiz Walji’s Ortho-K program for over 14 years, I would highly recommend it to any individual – child or adult. It gave me the freedom to be active, to see clearly, and to enact a safe alternative which was completely reversible. Dr. Hafiz Walji and his staff have been very friendly, kind, and knowledgeable during my journey through Ortho-K, and I look forward to many more years as his patient. Great with kids, and an expert in his field, Dr. Hafiz Walji is the perfect Optometrist for someone who is looking for high-quality eye care. — F.M., Markham Ontario
