So pre-arrange for your family’s eye-care examination today and take care of your eyesight.

Less Dietary Fat, Less Blindness

High-fat diets not only increase your likelihood of a heart attack and cancer, they also increase your risk of going blind. A diet rich in saturated fat and cholesterol is 80 per cent more likely to develop your macular degeneration, a condition that destroys vital central vision. Include more fibre and take vitamins in moderation to cut your risks of macular degeneration and cataracts, the two major common causes of reduced vision and/or blindness in advancing age.

Unhealthy diets clog up both arteries inside your heart and also inside your eyes. This reduces blood flow and nourishment inside your eyes that can lead to blindness such as in macular degeneration.

Preserving Your Sight

1. Cataracts: Vitamins C and E and proper sunglasses that block 95% of UVA and UVB can help. Most people with cataracts initially just need a new prescription for glasses. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of people do not require cataract surgery because in the long run, they will not cause significant vision loss.

2. Glaucoma: Walking briskly for 20 min, 4 times a week, can often help lower your eye pressure significantly. Vigilant monitoring of your eye pressure, field of vision, and thorough eye examinations can prevent blindness from the damages caused by glaucoma.

3. Macular Degeneration: Protection from UV rays with sunglasses and daily supplements of vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin E and zinc oxide with copper is recommended for most people.

How to Prepare for Your Next Thorough Eye Examination Appointment

A thorough eye exam is your most valuable tool in ensuring a lifetime of healthy eyes and clear sight. So why not come in prepared with some written notes in advance with the following details:

What concerns exactly are you wanting to have resolved at your eye appointment? Are you experiencing double vision or is it blurred vision, or is it both?

What chronic health condition do you or any of your family members suffer from? High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Lupus, Allergies, Multiple Sclerosis, etc. can all play a role in the health of your eyes.

All Heredity Eye Health problems, like Glaucoma, Keratoconus, etc. can increase one’s probability of acquiring that particular condition.

Names and dosages of all prescription as well as non-prescription medications including birth control pills, and acne medication with tetracyclines is important, since they can affect your eyes. If possible, bring in all current medications with you.

How exactly do you use your eyes at Work, at your Hobbies as well as at Play? Proper eyeglasses can only be prescribed with such details. Otherwise, your eye glasses can be the cause of your poor posture and neck and back problems too! You want to ensure eye comfort with computer use and eye safety in industrial settings as well as when playing home-renovator around the house.

Difficulty Learning? Mysterious Headaches? Head Tilting?

HYPERPHORIA  is a physical mis-alignment of the two eyes so that one eye is set higher in the head than the other.

This condition leads to severe problems with reading and learning, headaches, head titling, neck and shoulder pains, poor posture, and even lower back pain.

Students and adults alike, find themselves losing their place when reading, so they finger-read. Patients find difficulty judging distances, especially driving, where moving objects are concerned, car-sickness, and are usually very poor in athletics because of poor body coordination.

The most telling bodily compensation includes a small tilt of the head. This is done unconsciously in order to avoid double vision. But this head-tilting is what leads to most of the above problems.

An eye examination that addresses solving this common problem includes checking for head tilting, checking for head and body postures, treating with eye patching, measuring the extent of eye compensation, and prescribing a pair of eyeglasses that incorporate special lenses called Prisms. Such a specialized Eye Examination and this treatment usually helps alleviate a great deal of the above problems for both students and adults as well.

Red Eyes? Dry, Itchy, Burning, Watery Eyes? Sensitive to Contact Lens Wearing?

Natural tears within out eyes make our eyes comfortable and healthy by lubricating the inside lining of the eyes and by preventing eye infections. Lack of tears, on the other hand, can cause red eyes, dry, itchy, burning, sensitive and watery eyes.

Common causes of dry eyes are dry environments (both heating in the winter as well as air conditioning in the summer), excessive tear loss from drainage ducts, contact lenses, aging, and certain medications including vasoconstrictor eye drops  (like Visine that “take the red out”).

Treatment options include temporary (10-20 minutes) relief with artificial tears or permanent treatment relief with tear duct closure. Excessive use of artificial tears can dry the eyes instead of lubricate them by diluting the nature oils and lubricants within tears.
