How to Read Your Eyeglasses Prescription

O.D (oculus dextrus) is for your right eye and O.S (oculus sinister) is for your left eye.

The “sphere” column indicates how near-sighted or far-sighted you are. A minus sign in the sphere column means that you are near-sighted and a plus sign means that you are far-sighted.

If you have astigmatism, your cornea is shaped like the back of a spoon, curved more on one side that the other. The “cylinder” column refers to the measurable degree of astigmatism of your central cornea. The orientation of the spoon shape can differ from person to person, for instance, like a spoon standing on the end or on it’s side.

The “axis” column describes the orientation in the degrees from horizontal.

Bifocal prescriptions are indicated with the number such as “+1.50 add”. This number, when added on the sphere column of the prescription, gives the strength of the near-vision part of the bifocal lens.

Using Your Eyes and Your Computer

Work Station

When you use your computer, do you experience symptoms like headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, eye irritation, double vision, excessive tears or dry eyes, pain in the eyes or excessive blinking or squinting?

This means you should visit your optometrist for a comprehensive eye examination. And, when you do, be sure to tell the doctor about the computer work that you do. There are a number of things that you can do to arrange and use the parts of your workstation to eliminate or minimize discomfort.

Look at this workstation drawing and compare it to your workstation to make sure that your environment is not causing your vision problems.

Human eyes were made for most efficient use at a distance, but if you use the suggestions made here and those made by your doctor of optometry, you will be able to use your computer more comfortably and productively.

Do You Suffer from Poor Vision at Night?

The focussing ability of the eye changes in the dark. That is because the pupil dilates and this changes the eye’s aperture. In dim light, we experience “Night Myopia” and so we have trouble seeing far distances.

Second, poor nutrition, especially low levels of Vitamin A, can contribute to poor night vision.

Third, any kind of eye nerve problem, such as what can happen in Multiple Sclerosis (light desaturation) can lead to Night Myopia.

Fourth, an undiagnosed minor eye muscle coordination problem called a Latent Tropia can contribute to blurred or even disoriented vision at night. This eye deviation is too small to see in a mirror, but big enough to make things very blurry at night.

Less Dietary Fat, Less Blindness
