It’s that most wonderful time of the year!

It’s only a month to that very special time of the year! Each holiday season, however, thousands of children and adults as well, end up in hospital emergency rooms because of eye-related injuries. A little prevention goes a long way.

Toy Shopping: Avoid pellet guns, spray-guns, and spring-loaded toys. They are dangerous and can cause serious eye injuries. Buy age-appropriate toys as suggested by the manufacturer.

Driving Tips: As winter weather approaches, slow down! At 100km/hr, you lose 25% of your peripheral vision. This makes it difficult for you to see other drivers at your side or at the rear.

Winter Is So Bright…You’ve got to wear Shades: Bundle up and take your good quality sunglasses with you. UV rays can contribute to cataracts and macular degeneration.

He Shoots…He Scores! It’s hockey season again. Wear a proper CSA-Certified face protector at all times. It will save your eyesight too.

On The Road Again…

Ninety percent of our all-important driving decisions are based on our ability to see with our eyes. So, here are recommendations for safe summer driving.

  • Make sure you are seeing your best. Upgrade your eyewear prescription, if needed, to Maximize Your Vision.
  • Your Depth Perception is your judgment of relative distance. When you are moving fast, as inside a motor vehicle, it is crucial to make correct judgments quickly, regarding relative distances.
  • Night time drivers must not only be able to see in reduced lighting, but also to be able to see in spite of the presence of oncoming headlight glare, and to quickly recover from this glare.
  • Adequate Peripheral Vision is needed while driving to see the ‘big picture’ of the other lanes of traffic, the intersection, the sidewalk, and/or the cyclist lane and not just the road ahead of you.

Canada is 144, but Your EYES are only OVER 40

When the Age Monster comes calling on baby boomers, he gradually and increasingly steals away your ability to read the fine print, because words become difficult to see up close. This “40-and-over” condition is called Presbyopia (“Prez-bye-opia”).

Fortunately, you have more options than ever before to deal with this problem. Reading glasses, whether Full Frames or Franklins (granny glasses) are one option. They work very well, but can be a nuisance to carry around constantly.

For some, Segmented Spectacle Lenses, specifically bifocals, trifocals, or occupational lenses with lines work very well. Others dislike the cosmetics of wearing “visible” bifocals. Continue reading

Computer Eye Strain A Problem?

If you work at a Personal Computer for at least 2 hours a day, there is a very good chance that you suffer from a number of eye and vision-related problems. This group of problems is called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

CVS includes eyestrain, blurred vision, dry eyes, irritated and tired eyes, and also headaches. Neck and back aches are common problems that are related to the way you use your eyes at the computer.

Good News: Good Eye Care as well as improvements in the ergonomics of your work station can help a lot in minimizing CVS.

Because the way you use your eyes at the computer is quite different from the way you use your eyes while driving or reading, many computer users require a pair of eyeglasses specifically made for computer use. These specialized computer glasses have a different prescription and/ or a different lens design as compared to your everyday jack-of-all-trades eyeglasses.

Discover the Magic of Advance Ortho-K

If you are near-sighted (need glasses to see far distances), and wish you could see far without eyeglasses or contact lenses, discover the magic and freedom of Advance Orthokeratology.

Advance Ortho-K is a gentle, simple, and safe Vision Improvement Program free from the potential risks and side effects of surgical laser vision correction.

Hundreds of patients in our optometry practice have already benefited from this remarkable contact lens technology.

Our successful Ortho-K patients include children, firefighters, pilots, police officers, students, teachers, athletes, and patients who just lead busy and active lifestyles.

Most of our patients wear comfortable gas-permeable contact lenses only to sleep at night and remove them in the daytime. All during the day they can see clearly, and in most cases have normal 20/20 unaided vision. A few patients need to wear these lenses only occasionally.

Imagine going through the day with no glasses and no contact lenses and being able to see normally!

Internet – The Good, The Bad, and The Misinformed

The internet is often the first place our patients turn to for information about anything from aardvarks to zoology. However, if you are relying on the world wide web for information about your eyes (or any other health related issue), a word of caution is in order.

Running a quick search on the word “EYES” with a popular search engine produced 1,330,000,000 results, many of which contain inaccurate, misleading, and potentially dangerous information which is often presented as “advice”.
